CAREN GARFIELD
Vice President
Caren Garfield is the Vice President for MAC Realty Advisors focusing on debt and equity placement as well as investment property and land sales. Before joining MAC, she worked for several regional development companies as a Project Executive for Kettler, a Development Manager for Bozzuto Homes and Bozzuto Development Company, and a Vice President for Bank of America Community Development Corporation, and in acquisitions for a private real estate equity fund investing in multifamily assets. Throughout her career, she has developed various stages of more than 3,000 multifamily units, managed more than $500 million of development deals, and deployed more than $200 million in multifamily and mixed-use developments. She has experience in all residential and mixed-use product types and with all aspects of real estate development, investment and finance.
Ms. Garfield graduated from Harvard University with a Master in Urban Planning from the Graduate School of Design and received a Bachelor of Arts from Franklin & Marshall College. She is a member of Urban Land Institute (ULI) and Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) DC, and a licensed Real Estate Salesperson in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland.
BEN LAZARUS
Senior Director
Ben Lazarus is the Senior Director with more than six years of experience in the real estate industry including roles as a manager, research analyst, broker, investor, and consultant. Mr. Lazarus was a Research Manager at the CoStar Group. He led a team of analysts that collected and analyzed data for the CoStar Property and Comps database. On a quarterly basis, Mr. Lazarus managed the publication of detailed analytic market reports. Additionally, Mr. Lazarus was a partner in the Fusion Partners LLC, a boutique residential investment and brokerage firm. Mr. Lazarus invested in and assisted clients to identify and purchase target properties; upon acquisition, he executed repositioning strategies and then resold the properties. He was able deliver outstanding returns on invested capital to his equity investors.
Mr. Lazarus holds a BA with honors in Political Science from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia. He serves on the Young Leaders Program Committee of the ULI. He is a licensed Real Estate Salesperson in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland.
BRITTON BROWNE
Britton Browne, Senior Director has more than thirty years of real estate investment, development and marketing/sales experience. Mr. Browne is a fourth generation Washingtonian and his experience includes ground-up residential development (ranging from single-family homes to multi-story condominiums and apartment projects), conversions and land sales.
Prior to joining MAC Realty Advisors, Mr. Browne was a principal with HDF&B Realty Advisors responsible for the marketing and sales of multifamily properties, conversion to condo and sales of condo units.
In the 1980’s and 1990’s, Mr. Browne was Vice President and Director of Martin-Browne Investments, Inc. in Hobe Sound, Florida. Martin-Browne Investments was a residential real estate investment and development company with primary emphasis from West Palm to Vero Beach corridor.
Mr. Browne graduated from the University of Denver with a BSBA in Management. He is a licensed Real Estate Salesperson in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
NICK RUBENSTEIN
Nick Rubenstein is a Senior Associate with over ten years of experience in the real estate industry. He has worked in multifamily development as well as real estate brokerage.
Prior to MAC Mr. Rubenstein worked for Metro Properties, Inc. as a Development Manager, where he participated in Washington,DC-based residential acquisition, conversion, and development projects that ranged in size from a 12-unit condominium conversion to a 297-unit ground-up apartment development. As a Real Estate Analyst, Mr. Rubenstein worked at Cushman Wakefield with their noted Project Finance Group with Mr. McAllister for two years. In this capacity he was a member of the leading residential ground-up construction financing
placement team within the Washington, DC region, successfully working on over $1 billion worth of development financings during his tenure.
With over a decade of professional experience, Mr. Rubenstein has become an expert in financial modeling. Over the years he has honed his skills at discounted cash flow analyses, equity waterfall structuring, sensitivity analyses, and the many varied aspects of development budgeting, including income analysis, construction budgeting, as well as monthly cash flow analysis from pre-development through construction, lease-up, and stabilization. Mr. Rubenstein’s experience in project oversight gives him a valuable perspective on the many facets of development.
Mr. Rubenstein attended American University where he received a BA in Political Science. Awarded an academic scholarship, he later returned to American University’s Kogod School of Business where he received his MBA with a concentration in Management Consulting. Mr. Rubenstein is a licensed Real Estate Salesperson in the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland.
CATHERINE EASTER
Catherine Easter is Transaction Coordinator at MAC, with roles ranging from market research to client coordination. Before joining MAC, she gained experience in the real estate industry through internships at a real estate development firm in North Carolina and at the Urban Land Institute in Washington, DC.
For Washington, DC apartment transactions, Ms. Easter runs point on Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act(TOPA) matters including interaction with the Rental Housing Commission, assisting clients with preparation and fulfillment of tenant materials, and various landlord-tenant related matters.
Ms. Easter graduated with honors from the Poole College of Management at North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Business Administration and a concentration in finance in 2011. She has completed the Financial Analysis for Commercial Investment Real Estate course in the CCIM curriculum. Ms. Easter is a licensed Real Estate Salesperson in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
